Cuisinart TOB-195

Heating Units and Technology:

Cuisinart’s Exact Heat:  Ensures the temperature is maintained. No automatic shut off option.  Burning and over cooking can happen and damage to oven possible when it’s running longer than it has to.

Heating Units:  Number unspecified.  Though from the size, it probably has 4 heating units (unconfirmed, it’s an educated guess).  Unlikely to have independent control over the heating units.  Convection feature available.

Breville’s Element IQ:  Smart technology that controls the cooking time, and cooking temperature.  Remember the user’s preferred setting for future use automatically (not available in the TOB 195).  Automatically shuts off when done.  Much safer and never have to worry about burning your food.  Convection unavailable.

Heating Units: 4 independent heating units.  Each controlled by Element IQ.  Can be turned on or off, and each can be set to different temperature for perfect cooking result.

Though the Breville BOV650XL smart oven doesn’t have convection capability, I believe it more than makes up for it with all the extra smart features.  Distributing the heat where is needed at the perfect temperature is sometimes more important than convection.  In smaller size ovens, the convection isn’t an absolute necessity…it can how ever drive up the cost of the appliance.

Since the Cuisinart doesn’t have as much wattage, the convection feature makes up some of the lack of power.

Power Output:

Cuisinart: 1500 watt max

Breville: 1500 to 1800 watt

Breville’s Element IQ decides how much power is necessary to get the best results.  With more power to spare, it can choose to lower the power or increase it depending on what you are cooking.

Preset Cooking Options:

Cuisinart TOB-195
6 Presets: pizza/bake, toast, bagel, broil, reheat, and defrost

Breville BOV650XL
9 Presets: Toast, Bagel, Bake, Roast, Broil, Pizza, Cookies, Defrost, Reheat.

More presets means less hassle.  All you do is set and walk away.  You don’t need to memorize what temperature, or for how long you should set your timer.  The BOV650XL does it all for you.

Control Interface:

Cuisinart:  16 buttons that controls the presets, temperature, time…etc.  Small black and gray LCD display.  One issue that is not mentioned in most online stores is the TOB-195 requires you to memorize button combinations that is not on the control panel.  It is very inconvenient  and confusing.  Using a toaster oven shouldn’t be rocket science.

Breville: Large dual color LCD screen that indicates when the oven is preheating or cooking.  The LCD also display all the options and setting you can choose from.  There is no hidden options you have to memorize.  There are also very few bottoms.  The two large dials are marked clearly, and very easy to use.

Minimum Temperature Adjustment:

Cuisinart TOB 195: 25 Degree Increment

Breville BOV650XL: 10 Degree Increment

To get a more precise cooking temperature, smaller increment works much better.  It achieves your desired done-ness much more accurately.

Constructed Material:

The TOB-195 has a stainless steel front, but the rest of the oven is constructed out of unspecified material.

The BOV650XL is made out of all stainless steel.

Crumb Tray Position:

TOB-195: Located in the back of the oven.  Needs to move the oven around 180 degrees every time you want to clean the tray.

BOV650XL:  Located in the front of the oven.  Simply slide it out, clean, and slide it back.  Nothing needs to be moved.

This is one of the biggest complaint against the TOB-195 oven.  Since the control panel is located in the lower front of the oven, that means there is no room for the crumb tray access.  You have to pick up the oven, turn it around, access the crumb tray, possibly have to unplug the electric cord, and then turn it back around and plug the electric cord back…it can be a big hassle.

Number of Rack Positions:

Cuisinart: 2 rack positions

Breville: 3 rack positions

The additional rack positions adds more cooking options.  Different cooking method has different optimal distance to both top and bottom of the oven.  For example, to broil, you want the rack to be as close to the top as possible.  For baking, you want the rack to be lower in the oven.  More positions means more efficient and more even cooking.

Size Difference:

Width 18.50″ x Depth 16.93″ x Height 10.04″

0.6 cu ft or 12 inch pizza or 6 slices of toast

Width 16.5″ x Depth 15.55″ x Height 10.25″

0.6 cu ft or 12 inch pizza or 4 slices of toast

The BOV650XL is a little bit smaller in size, so if you have a limited counter space, it might be a better choice.   If the number of toasts is what matters to you the most, the TOB 195 can accommodate 6 slices at once…which kind of throws me for a loop…both ovens’ limit is 12 inches when it comes to pizza, but somehow the Cuisinart has room for two more slices of toasts?

Either Breville is being too modest or Cuisinart is being a little too optimistic.

Warranty Difference:

The TOB 195 comes with a 3 year warranty.  The BOV650XL comes with a 1 year warranty.

Difference In Price:

There are no differences in price.  They both go for about $170.

Final Word:

With the price being the same, I think we have to really focus on the features of these ovens to choose the best one for your kitchen.  The Cuisinart has the convection feature, while the BOV650XL does not.  On the other hand, the BOV650XL has the smart feature that TOB-195 lacks.

If you really want the convection feature but don’t want to pay the $240 ish price tag of the BOV800XL, then the TOB 195 is a good deal.

However, if you want a better oven over all, BOV650XL is one you can’t miss.  Even without the convection feature, it still has the ability to cook beautifully.  The Element IQ controls the heat better than the TOB 195 because each one of the heating unit can be controlled separately.

The BOV650XL is also constructed out of better material because the entire outer shell is made from stainless steel.  From an aesthetic point of view, a lot more people prefer the BOV650.  The larger dual color LCD display, the simple yet modern dials looks less clustered.

The BOV650XL is also easier to clean.  As we have discovered earlier in the article, the crumb tray is easily accessible from the front.  The TOB 195 oven’s crumb tray is located in the back.  You have to turn the whole oven around just to clean the crumbs.

Last but not least, I think one of the biggest benefit of the BOV650XL is the ease of use.  With so many preset functions, you don’t have to know what temperature to set, nor for how long.  The oven does it for you.  On top of that, it remembers your preferred setting for the next time.  It takes the thinking out of cooking.

Now, in my personal opinion, I think the BOV650XL is the best buy.  That is not to say the Cuisinart is a bad toaster oven.  In fact, it’s gotten a lot of great reviews as well.  But to me, the BOV650XL looks better, cooks better, and it’s easier to use.
