coffeemakers-image1For many coffee aficionados, there are few things more amazing than starting the day with a perfectly brewed cup of Joe. The first cup of coffee is perfect for kick-starting your morning, especially if it’s made just the way you want. Different people have different tastes, though. Some may not want theirs too strong, too weak, too hot, or too cold.

The solution to this problem is to get the best coffee maker that can accommodate your preferences. There are countless different models on the market and they all have their own features that make them unique, but don’t expect them to be devoid of any drawbacks of their own. With the varying price ranges also available to the shopper, you’d expect to always get what you’re paying for – that isn’t always the case.

Our expert team of reviewers here on Appliance Authority all want you to get the best bang for your buck. You’ll want to know what the pros and cons are, and you’ll want to know how much counter space to prepare if you’re going for something that’s classy but also a bit on the expensive (and larger) side. Of course, we’re not just choosing the models that put a hole in your pocket. Quality coffee can come from anywhere, even from the more affordable variety. Just don’t expect them to be loaded with customization features for all your intricate brewing needs.

If you’re looking for a single-serve coffee machine, we’ve also reviewed some that we know you’ll love.

Considerations When Buying

The variety of coffee makers will likely leave you scratching your head and wondering how you’re possibly supposed to choose between them. While it’s true that durability and quality can cost extra, don’t close your mind off to the possibility that a cheaper model may already meet your needs and specifications.

Cup Capacity

In some families, there’s only one person who’s constantly up early to prepare a hot cup of coffee. Other families have the entire family on that caffeine habit. Before you invest in a coffee maker, check how many cups the device can make. You may not want 12 cups in 5 minutes flat if you know you’ll only be able to drink about 1 or 2 cups every morning. On the other hand, some people have a big family or want a coffee maker that can make a big batch for frequent guests, so it pays to know what your needs are before making a decision to buy.

Size of Cupsbest home coffee machine

Most models will state somewhere in the specifications the maximum cup size it can support. You may have a favorite mug that’s irreplaceable because – well, maybe you just really like it and you think it’s good luck to use. For others, they don’t consider it the end of the world if they realize they need to change their coffee mugs, but extreme coffee lovers usually have an over-sized one for an extreme caffeine boost.

Machine Size

If you have a small kitchen, the wise first step in purchasing coffee makers is determining what size you’re willing to work with. Maybe you’ll just be using it every now and then and put it somewhere like a storage room for when you need it. Or you may leave it out in the open, ready to use so you can get your morning jolt. Some of the models we have here are larger than they appear on picture, but if you have plenty of free space for even a beast-sized coffee maker, then by all means go with something that you can proudly show off to guests.

Functions or Features

Some models of coffee brewer allow you to choose from different settings of strength for your coffee. You’ll find this particularly useful when you’re thinking of using a specific type of coffee beans for your brew. We all have different tastes and it’s good that manufacturers are giving us a good number of options to choose from.

Ease of Use

Preferably, they should come with manuals if the settings or features are not ideal for first-time users. Of course, many of the products will be convenient enough that you know what every single button does — but not for all of them. If you’re experienced with using coffee makers, this won’t be a problem, but if you’ve never tried using one before, we suggest that you check the available features or spend some time with the instruction manual after you’ve made the purchase.

Durabilitybest drip type coffee machine

You won’t get accurate information about a product’s durability from just reading specifications. It’s normal for companies to brag about how amazing and long-lasting their products are — because that’s just marketing. For this, we recommend you to check individual reviews which is the most reliable method of assessing just how sturdy any model of any brand is.

Ease of Cleaning

It’s common for some buyers to be so convinced with the great features a model has that they end up parting too early with their cash. They don’t give ample time to think about how easy or difficult it is to maintain the appliance, and so they end up with slightly bitter feelings about their purchase. Unless you want to spend an hour of frustrated grumbling trying to figure out how to clean your coffee maker properly, the best thing to do is check the reviews.

Our 5 Best Coffee Makers in 2020

Bonavita 1900TS

  • Stainless steel lining
  • BPA Free
  • Large shower head for even extraction
  • Optional pre-infusion function
  • Showerhead, filter basket, and lid are dishwasher-safe
  • Double-walled carafe design
  • Sleek and compact build

The perfect choice for most people who love great coffee but can’t spare the time for pour-over. It has a smart, internal design such as a wide showerhead and flat-bottomed filter. The Bonavita 1900TS also takes up only a sliver of counter space in most kitchens thanks to its incredibly compact design. So aesthetics-wise, it’s amazing, but what has us at awe about this particular model is its outstanding brew of coffee. We think it’s arguably one of the best coffee makers out there thanks to its significantly above-average output and consistency. Of course, it’s not the cheapest model, but a lot of consumers are willing to spend the extra bucks to get something that’s so high-quality and is built to deliver.

When it comes to durability, we think it’s likely to be the last drip-coffee machine you’ll own. That’s not just because of its many great features and fantastic performance – the Bonavita 1900TS is one of the most durable models of coffee maker we’ve ever seen. It’s an improvement on its earlier predecessors, with many design tweaks such as the tight seal, clean pour, larger water reservoir, and convenient water level marks. We think – at a price of $180 – you’re definitely getting your money’s worth.

Mr. Coffee 12-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker

  • Water Filtration Ready: Removes up to 97% Chlorine
  • Delay Brew Timer
  • Grab-A-Cup Auto Pause feature
  • 2-Hour Automatic Shut Off
  • Cleaning Cycle informs you when device needs to be cleaned
  • Easy clean up
  • Brew Strength Selector for preferred brew
  • Water Window

A model that beautifully combines performance with affordability. No wonder it’s the #1 Best Seller on Amazon. Mr. Coffee is already a very popular brand, offering a wide range and variety of kitchen appliances sold, and we’re not surprised that they’re the masterminds behind this classy yet power-packed product. Aside from customers swooning over its more sophisticated look, this is a no-spill wonder. The positive reviews are enough to convince a savvy buyer into picking this up in the appliance store or purchasing it online, but let’s take a step back to consider its possible cons.

Some have complained about the brew strength of the Mr. Coffee BVMC-SJX33GT, but we think this is only because different people have different opinions of what they’d consider “strong.” Also, there’s the issue of brewing time. Apparently, it takes considerably longer to whip up a batch of fresh brew, so in that aspect, it’s disappointed more than a handful of customers. Of course, aside from those two, we fail to see any other reason for not buying this for your home. For anyone who’s looking for a quality product that doesn’t give you any unnecessary hassle (and at a fraction of what premium coffee makers cost), we recommend this baby, which is sold at $40 on Amazon.

Brazen Plus Coffee Brew System

  • Pre-Soak setting for enhanced coffee flavor
  • Programmable Brew Start Time
  • Ideal Coffee Extraction
  • SCAA Certified
  • Memory: stores system settings
  • BPA free
  • Stainless steel thermal carafe with spout upgrade
  • Variable temperature settings

This is the new and improved Brazen Plus Coffee Brew System, with several great features that were not available with the first Brazen Brew System when it was introduced last 2014. The Brazer Plus has now been SCAA Certified, meaning it has passed the rigorous standards of the Specialty Coffee Association of America. Just from that, you’d expect this to exceed all your wildest expectations. To be honest, it has impressed us in more than a few ways, which is the reason why it’s on our list of top coffee brewers this year.

Although the reviews and ratings for this product indicate a superb user experience, we wouldn’t recommend this for everyone, unless you have ample time on your hands to get acquainted with the many minor tweaks and adjustments to get the brew that’s perfect for you. For the truly dedicated coffee aficionado, yes, it will light up your day knowing your coffee will always meet your intricate preferences.

Cuisinart DCC-1200 Brew Central

  • Attractive brushed metal design
  • 12-Cup carafe w/ ergonomic handle
  • Includes Brew Pause feature
  • Adjustable Heater Plate
  • 24-hr Advance Brew Start
  • Programmable Auto Shutoff
  • Time-To-Clean monitor w/ indicator light
  • Convenient cord storage

At a price of $90, the Cuisinart DCC-1200 Brew Central is not a first-choice for people looking for a budget coffee machine, but it can make the smoothest batch of delicious, freshly-brewed coffee you’ll ever taste. The carafe is constructed solidly and fits well in the square body so there’s no chance of someone knocking it loose by accident. Another thing that we love so much about this model is that it’s more than just “eye-candy.” It really is a state-of-the-art and well-built appliance that any kitchen owner would be proud to have on their counter, but while it does rake in some stellar reviews, some concerns have been brought up about the design.

The carafe lid, although secure, can be difficult to remove — a small issue for something that delivers so much power and great-tasting coffee, but we’re dedicated to keeping you aware of what you’re getting yourself into so we still prefer to put it out there. The bottom line is that the Cuisinart DCC-1200 is a coffee maker that’s so intelligently thought out that we think it’s earned its current spotlight.

Hamilton Beach 46201 12-Cup Digital Coffee Maker

  • Designed for easy access and easy filling
  • Adjustable brewing: bold, regular, and 1-4 cup options
  • Adjustable keep warm feature
  • Automatic Pause & Serve
  • Programmable Clock w/ 2-hour Automatic Shutoff
  • Swing-out brew basket
  • Swivel base for convenient access to water reservoir

While it‘s true that you can find a cheaper model on the market, the Hamilton Beach 46201 is definitely worth its price. The coffee maker itself is mostly made of stainless steel, although the tank is plastic. Perhaps not the best choice for someone who’s thinking of stretching their $50 purchase for more than a couple of years. Although easy on the wallet, it’s far from perfect. There are a lot of reviews of it breaking down a little past a year of using it. But for whatever you’re paying for it, it does come with impressive versatility, letting you choose between bolder or milder flavors. It also comes with a pause-and-brew feature in case you’d like something in a flash.

Our final thought on the product is that although some of the components won’t stand the test of time, it sure makes the coffee lover very happy the entire time it’s in working condition. Product reviews for it are enough to blow its competition out of the water, and we commend Hamilton Beach for creating something so fantastic at an affordable price. Most people who have owned this particular model are satisfied with its results and performance, and since it’s covered with a 5-year warranty, why not give it a chance to work its magic?
